OUR MISSION
Water Zambia is a non-governmental organization committed to providing sustainable clean water solutions to communities in Africa. We believe that access to clean water is a basic human right and our mission is to empower communities with the knowledge and tools to create lasting change.

BACKGROUND
Founded in 2011, Water Zambia has reached more than 260,000 households across Zambia with clean water, WASH, anti-deforestation, and other related projects. Water Zambia employs around 150 full-time and part-time staff, most of whom have been recruited from villages we have served. Our goal is to give clean water to everyone in Zambia, and provide WASH education until all villages have reached the Open Defecation Free (ODF) standard, while providing alternative livelihoods and anti-deforestation options to ensure water remains accessible for many generations to come.
SERVICES
Water Zambia offers a range of services to communities in Africa, including:
  • Borehole Drilling: We work with communities to install boreholes that provide safe, clean water for the entire communities. We train people in each village to care for and repair the borehole when it breaks so the community doesn’t lose access to safe water.
  • Capacity building: We empower communities with the knowledge and skills they need to manage and maintain their water systems. This includes training on water testing, pump repair, and sanitation practices, as well as community engagement and leadership development. We recruit most of our field staff from the village and provide them with permanent employment opportunities. We also empower local women’s groups to have high impacts.
  • Monitoring and evaluation: We regularly monitor and evaluate our programs to ensure they are functioning properly and meeting the needs of the communities they serve. We have a custom mobile application that is designed to be effective even in areas with poor cellular reception that tracks our programs in near real-time.
IMPACT

Water Zambia has worked in every corner of Zambia.
  • Water Zambia has drilled wells in more than 200 villages, providing clean water to over 100,000 people in communities throughout Africa.
  • We have worked with more than 200,000 households across Zambia on anti-deforestation projects.
  •  We funded and empowered a women’s group in Northwest Province to start a tree-growing nursery, where they have grown and distributed more than 40,000 trees.
  • We have a 10 hectare bamboo farm in Eastern Province under irrigation that is to be distributed to households to use as a deforestation reduction measure.
  • We have provided WASH training to more than 20,000 households.
  • We have been responsible for lifting more than 400 complete villages to Open Defecation Free standards through our WASH program.
  • We have repaired over 100 broken boreholes that were drilled by other organizations or government, and trained people from each village to repair the pumps.
  • We have trained Water Point Committees in nearly 300 villages to maintain their water source.
  • We have developed a mobile application for Monitoring and Evaluation that provides near real-time feedback on our projects.
