CLEAN WATER
Humans cannot live more than 3 days without water. It is one of the most basic needs. In our modern age, it is hard to believe that people still live without access to safe, clean water, but around 2 billion people globally do not have access to a safe water source. A 2018 nation-wide study by the Zambia Demographic and Health Study showed that 42% of the rural population in Zambia obtains water from an unsafe source.
We believe that clean water should be a basic human right. The goal of Water Zambia is to give safe, clean water to every single person in Zambia and make sure that people are empowered to maintain their water source, ensuring a sustainable supply of safe water for generations to come.
Cholera and other diarrhoeal-related diseases are the leading cause of death for children under the age of 5 in sub-Saharan Africa. Two simple interventions, namely safe water supply and good sanitation & hygiene (WASH) practices, can effectively curb those statistics, as 60% of all diarrhoeal deaths are caused by unsafe water or poor sanitation & hygiene practices. Clean water very literally saves lives.

The way we provide safe, clean water is through drilling boreholes that access deeper, non-polluted reservoirs of water beneath the surface. This water well is capped with a hand-pump that allows the community to draw water from the ground efficiently. The well is usually located in a central point for the community that greatly reduces the amount of time spent on daily water collection.
